Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja, to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, holding in New York, United States of America.
Shettima is representing President Bola Tinubu at the global summit and will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2025 between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm New York time.
NewsQuest reports that this Shettima first participated and addressed world leaders at the 79th session of the UNGA in September 2024
Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity Stanley Nkowcha in a statement said, Shettima will join other dignitaries at the UN high-level general debates, among other side events.
The Vice President is expected to also announce Nigeria’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement at this year’s UN special event on climate.
Vice President Shettima is also slated to attend the high-level roundtable of the Global Champions on Adequate and Affordable Housing to be hosted by the President of Kenya on September 24 and attend to other bilateral meetings and events.
The statement said after attending UNGA, the Vice President will leave for Frankfurt, Germany, where he is slated to meet with officials of the Deutche Bank before returning to Nigeria.
The 80th session marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, with high international representation expected, including more than 150 leaders worldwide.
