Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru has expressed optimism that world leaders are gradually beginning to understand that insecurity which affects many parts of Africa especially, is a borderless issue that needs urgent concerted action to tackle.
Badaru who spoke to journalists in Beijing, the People’s Republic of China’s capital during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), said “Slowly by slowly, the world leaders are beginning to understand that insecurity is borderless now.
“There is need for joint efforts to handle insecurity in the whole world.”
Badaru, a former Governor of Jigawa State was one of President Bola Tinubu’s official delegations to the 2024 FOCAC in Beijing explained that there is a push by the world leaders to work together to see that the menace of insecurity is being taken care of across the world.
According to him, part of the deliberations between African leaders and the Government of China during the security and peace summit at the FOCAC centered on many of the insecurity challenges facing the continent.
“Most of the African countries discussed their challenges and we agreed to work with China and other countries to ensure that security is enhanced in Africa, the Sahel, and indeed, Nigeria,” the Defence Minister said.
Badaru said, “We have been working on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will be signed this year on broader security aspects and that will handle most of the important concepts that need to be put together to work together so that we can fight insecurity in Africa and the world.”
The Defence Minister also disclosed that the recent MoU signed between Nigeria and China on nuclear energy was an important instrument that would help the country develop its nuclear capabilities mainly for civil use..
Nigeria in recent times has recorded unprecedented security challenges including banditry, kidnapping for ransom, armed robbery, terrorism, and crude oil theft.
