The main faction of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by the Minister Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched renovations at the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, preparing for staff to return following a police unsealing of the premises.
Workers have yet to resume at the Zone 5 facility, but painting crews, air-conditioner installers and locksmiths were active Monday, according to a party insider who spoke to NewsQuest on condition of anonymity.
Locks and keys are being changed, with offices reassigned to members of the faction’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed.
Our correspondent gathered that the
moves come days after police removed barricades around the main building—though a handful of officers and vehicles remain on-site—granting access to the Minister Wike-aligned group.
On Saturday, Mohammed announced the reopening of Wadata Plaza and the PDP’s presidential campaign office at Legacy House in Maitama, citing compliance with court orders.
The facilities have been handed to his NWC, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu as national secretary.
“The police have demonstrated professionalism and adherence to the rule of law,” Mohammed said in a statement issued by national publicity secretary Jungudo Mohammed.
He warned against any disruptions that could breach the peace.
The developments deepen a bitter PDP schism.
A rival NWC led by Tanimu Turaki condemned the police action as “contemptuous,” with spokesman Ini Ememobong arguing it tampers with the status quo ahead of a Court of Appeal ruling on a related judgment.
“This could render the appellate decision nugatory,” Ememobong said.
Staff loyal to the Turaki camp may hesitate to return amid the changes, the insider noted.
