The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), under the leadership of Dr. Zacch Adedeji as Executive Chairman, has an ambitious plan to increase Nigeria’s collectible revenues through an efficient tax management system. The nation’s top tax agency has a revenue target of about N19.4 trillion for this fiscal year.

FIRS’ recent decision to launch a new slogan is therefore strategically designed and aimed to promote a positive perception of tax compliance by emphasizing the benefits of simplifying the tax process and maximizing revenue.

According to the FIRS, the slogan;  “Simplifying Tax, Maximising Revenue,” emphasizes the benefits of compliance, hoping to influence taxpayer behavior by making tax compliance more appealing and less burdensome.

It is, therefore, necessary to understand that this approach is part of a broader strategy to improve tax morale and compliance through moral suasion interventions, which have been shown to have mixed results in the past.

A statement released on FIRS’ Facebook handle quotes Dr. Adedeji as saying that the winning slogan was a result of the Buzzword Initiative which was meant to key into the customer-centric vision the new FIRS has embarked on.

The statement said, following the need to create awareness and build consciousness, the buzzword competition aimed to achieve the following objectives

📌 To create a phrase that is catchy, memorable, relevant, and reflective of our vision, mission, and core values.

📌 To promote inclusiveness in line with our core values of “Collective Responsibility”.

📌 To display the FIRS brand’s identity as a customer-centric organization.

📌 To open the space for FIRS to cultivate an internal culture and external perception that impact positively on revenue generation.
