The Federal Government on Wednesday said that it has started preparing its 2027 budget aiming to send the spending plan to the National Assembly before the end of 2026.
The government said the idea is to avoid delays that have often driven approval past the start of the fiscal year.
Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Doris Uzoka-Anite said the administration is already assembling the proposal, which President Bola Tinubu is expected to present to lawmakers before December 31.
“We are working on the 2027 budget, and our intention is to present it before the end of the year,” Uzoka-Anite told reporters after a Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
NewsQuest reports that a year-end submission would give legislators more time to examine revenue assumptions, spending priorities and deficit projections before the 2027 fiscal year begins on January 1.
The nation’s annual budget is the central instrument through which the government sets expenditure plans, revenue targets and broader economic objectives.
Government has not yet disclosed the proposed budget’s overall size, revenue outlook, borrowing needs or allocations to priority sectors.
Those details are expected to become clearer as ministries, departments and agencies finalize their submissions.
The announcement follows a September directive from the Budget Office of the Federation requiring government agencies to submit 2027 personnel-cost proposals along with their establishing laws, part of an effort to tighten payroll controls and prevent unverified bodies from receiving funding.
