President Bola Tinubu on Friday renamed the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna after General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, elevating the facility to the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.

In a nationwide address marking this year’s Democracy Day, President Tinubu described General Yar’Adua as one of “the architects of modern democratic Nigeria” and said the renaming recognizes the late officer’s “vision of national partnership.”

He said the government has approved a programme to revitalize the completed institute under its new name.

“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership.

“In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology,” the President noted.

General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a prominent military officer and cousin of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, died in custody in December 1997 after being accused of plotting a coup against then‑ruler Sani Abacha.

His legacy has long been invoked in discussions about Nigeria’s return to civilian rule.
