President Bola Tinubu on Saturday congratulated Nigeria’s under-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, after they defeated Japan 2-1 in Rabat to become the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The President, who received the news after returning from campaign engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, described the victory as a landmark for Nigerian football and an inspiration for young women across the country.
“What wonderful news to return home to,” Tinubu said in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga.
“Our young girls have conquered the world and given Nigerians everywhere another reason to celebrate our great country.”
Nigeria took the lead through Awawu Bashiru in the 39th minute and extended its advantage two minutes after the interval through Oluebube Umejiaku. Japan pulled one back through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute, but the Flamingos held on to secure their first title in the competition.
The result marked the first time an African side had won the tournament since its inception in 2008. Nigeria had previously reached the semifinals but had never before advanced to the final.
“To our gallant Flamingos, I say congratulations,” Mr. Tinubu said. “You have shown courage, discipline, determination and the Nigerian spirit of never giving up.”
The President singled out Bashiru and Umejiaku, whose goals decided the final, while praising the broader squad for its teamwork throughout the tournament. Umejiaku was later named winner of the tournament’s Golden Ball award.
Tinubu also commended the coaching staff, the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission for their roles in the team’s success.
“Today, Nigeria celebrates you,” he said. “You have written your names in gold, and your country is immensely proud of you.”
The President said his administration would continue to invest in grassroots sports and expand opportunities for young Nigerians—particularly girls—to develop and pursue their potential.
“Congratulations once again, Flamingos,” Tinubu said. “Thank you for making Nigeria proud.”
