Secretary-General of the Muslim World League Mohammed Al‑Isa, on Thursday met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa Abuja to reaffirm the organization’s commitment to promoting interfaith cooperation and social stability across West Africa.

Al‑Isa in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said he expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his government’s patronage of the Muslim World League’s new initiative for social peace in West Africa and for backing the initiative’s final communique, dubbed the “Abuja Declaration.”

The document lays out a joint plan of action that calls for coordinated work by government institutions, solidarity between Muslim and Christian religious leaders, and active participation from civil‑society organizations, Al‑Isa said.

The declaration also proposes the formation of a regional coordinating body made up of religious and civic leaders and institutions to monitor and follow up on implementation of the commitments in the plan, he added.

NewsQuest reports that the meeting comes as West African countries continue to grapple with rising communal tensions and the spillover effects of militant violence in parts of the Sahel and coastal states, where religious and ethnic differences have at times been exploited by extremist groups.

Tinubu, who assumed office in 2023, has continued to emphasize both security and social cohesion in policy statements, seeking international partnerships to bolster domestic efforts.

President Tinubu’s engagement with the Muslim World League signals an alignment between a global Islamic organization and Nigeria’s federal government on the value of faith‑based collaboration in addressing regional instability.

The Muslim World League, based in Saudi Arabia, has in recent years expanded programmes focused on interfaith dialogue and countering radicalization.
