The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu on Wednesday handed out checks totaling more than N2.43 billion to the families and beneficiaries of 1,075 deceased officers, in fulfilment of the force’s pledge to support those left behind after years of delays in insurance payouts.
Deputy Commissionwr of Police and Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) Anthony Placid in a statement said the
ceremony at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, Abuja, covered claims from policy years spanning 2018 to 2026, including long-overdue recoveries from prior obligations.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Lydia Ameh, the Force’s insurance officer, told guests at the event that the payments reflect IGP Disu’s determination to prioritize personnel welfare.
“Decisive steps have been taken to ensure compliance by insurance providers and prevent delays in claims settlement,” she said, adding that the force’s insurance unit is committed to “efficient, transparent, and accountable service delivery.”
IGP Disu, in brief remarks, described the event as a tribute to officers who died in the line of duty.
“This goes beyond financial support — it represents the Force’s enduring obligation to honor the courage, service, and commitment of its fallen heroes while standing firmly by their families,” he said.
The IGP promised to intensify efforts to bolster welfare systems, using technology to speed up processing, enhance transparency, and eliminate bottlenecks.
The Nigeria Police Force, in its statement, reaffirmed that such support is essential to national peace and security.
The payouts comes in the middle of ongoing challenges for Nigeria’s police, including demands for better pay and conditions amid rising insecurity.
