Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu has launched a four‑month vocational training programme for 150 youths in Abia State.
The move is part of the government’s desire to upscale the role of skills development in harnessing Nigeria’s demographic dividend.
The initiative, called “An Artisan Training on Building Projects,” is funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and run by Family Homes Funds Ltd., with logistical support from Mr. Kalu’s office.
The pilot, which runs from August through November, targets participants in Abia and Enugu states.
Of the 150 trainees, 130 were selected from 13 wards in Bende Local Government Area after intervention by the deputy speaker, who opened the program at a ceremony in his constituency.
Kalu who flagged off the programme said successful participants will receive certificates recognized both domestically and internationally and will be eligible for job placements.
“This initiative would not have been possible without the President,” Kalu said, referring to President Bola Tinubu.
“He energized Family Home to begin to scout for youths who will be equipped for the future.”
The Deputy Speaker urged trainees to complete the program and resist dropping out, framing the effort as an investment in national development.
“The youths are the energy of the nation. The more we equip them, the better we build the nation,” he said.
A representative of Family Homes Funds Ltd., Builder Ugwueri John, described the programme as an alternative to white‑collar employment, designed to give young people practical skills that can support economic growth.
Trainee representatives,Kalu Chinedu Peter and Dabara Samuel thanked Deputy Speaker Kalu for bringing the scheme to Bende.
