NIMC seeks global partnership in New York for digital economy backbone

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is pressing a case to reposition Nigeria as the backbone of the country’s emerging digital economy.

NIMC is convening a high-level forum on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to showcase new legislation and a national roadmap aimed at widening access to services and cross-border commerce.

The agency, charged with issuing and managing identity credentials, will host the event on September 22, bringing together government officials, development partners, technology companies and civil-society representatives.

NewsQuest reports that gathering, supported by the World Bank’s ID4D project, comes as Nigeria prepares to implement the NIMC Act 2026, a law expected to accelerate enrollment, data interoperability and the use of digital identity as public infrastructure.

“Nigeria is entering a new phase of digital transformation, where identity, trust and inclusive access are no longer optional,” said NIMC in the statement announcing the New York event.

“We want to demonstrate how trusted identity systems can expand service delivery, reduce fraud and create new economic opportunities.”

The session, scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 22, will feature opening remarks and a keynote by the Director-General and chief executive officer of NIMC Engineer Abisoye Coker-Odusote along with panel conversations on identity-enabled access to services, digital trust and sovereignty, interoperability, and Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) roadmap. Organizers said venue details will be shared with confirmed guests.

The timing is strategic. Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy by population, has been racing to digitize government services, financial access and social programs while grappling with low enrollment and fragmented identity databases that have hampered service delivery. Proponents argue that a trusted, widely adopted digital identity can streamline subsidies, speed financial inclusion, and support cross-border trade.

The World Bank’s ID4D initiative, which provides technical and financial support to identity systems globally, has backed the NIMC effort, signaling confidence among multilateral partners in the commission’s technical roadmap.

Private-sector players, including payments and telecommunications firms, will be looking for clear interoperability rules and privacy safeguards that would let them build on government-issued identifiers.

The Sept. 22 meeting will serve both as a policy showcase and as a networking forum, officials said, aiming to align donor financing, private investment and technical collaborations behind Nigeria’s DPI ambitions. If successful, the effort could serve as a model for other governments in Sub-Saharan Africa seeking to tie identity systems to broader digital infrastructure.

“Nigeria has the scale and the demand to get this right,” said a development-sector participant involved in identity programs across Africa.

“The question is whether governance, technology and public trust can be synchronized quickly enough to deliver inclusive outcomes.”

The event epitomizes the balancing act that many countries face: harnessing digital identity’s economic benefits while ensuring the safeguards that protect citizens’ rights. With the NIMC Act 2026 now on the books, Nigeria’s experiment will be watched closely in New York and beyond.

For press or partnership inquiries, organizers have asked interested parties to register; venue details will follow upon confirmation.
