NNPC: Gas supply not behind drop in power generation

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has dismissed claims that gas-supply constraints are responsible for the recent decline in electricity generation, insisting that its gas-transportation network remains fully available to deliver gas to power plants across the country.

In a statement issued by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, the company said operational records from its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), showed no transportation-related constraints that could explain the drop in generation.

It added that gas production had grown by about 10 per cent so far in 2026.

The statement directly challenged an assessment by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which had cited limited gas availability as a factor in lower power output.

NISO said on November 5 that inadequate gas supplies had prevented some thermal power stations from operating at available capacity, while reduced water inflows had curtailed hydroelectric generation.

It said the lower available electricity had reduced allocations to distribution companies and contributed to more load shedding.

NNPC’s response narrowed the dispute to the condition of its transport infrastructure.

It said the network operated by NGIC “remains available” to support deliveries to power-generating stations across the country.

The company said gas production has risen by about 10 per cent so far in 2026, attributing the increase to the Federal Government’s gas-development and monetisation agenda.

It argued that gas-supply availability is therefore not the central problem.

NNPC, however, also acknowledged that available pipelines do not guarantee electricity.

It said gas production, commercial supply arrangements and actual deliveries to individual plants must be assessed separately from transportation infrastructure.

The company said a full diagnosis should examine the readiness of generating units, maintenance schedules and actual gas offtake –the amount of gas that plants take delivery of.

It called for a coordinated review involving gas suppliers, transporters, generators and NISO to identify the specific constraints behind the shortfall.

NNPC did not provide figures for gas delivered to individual power stations or current generation levels, leaving unresolved the question of whether fuel is reaching plants in the volumes needed.

Gas-fired plants account for a substantial share of the nation’s grid electricity, making reliable production and delivery central to efforts to improve supply.
