2027: Obasanjo’s son breaks ranks, joins Tinubu’s re-election train

Olujuwon Obasanjo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has pledged support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Olujuwon made the declaration on Wednesday during a visit to the headquarters of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement in Abuja, where he was appointed Special Adviser on Political Affairs.

National Coordinator Sunday Asuku received him and led him on a tour of the organization’s facilities.

He said Tinubu had “started on a good note” and urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to join hands to sustain the ongoing reforms and ensure continuity in governance.

The move adds a prominent political family name to a grassroots campaign group that is expanding its national operation ahead of next year’s vote.

He described the appointment as an honor and said he intended to help advance the group’s mobilization work and Tinubu’s second-term bid.

The appointment places the younger Obasanjo in a pro-Tinubu political structure even as his father has been a prominent critic of successive administrations.

Obasanjo said his family permits members to hold independent political views and pursue their interests “without animosity,” adding that he has belonged to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) since 2014.

In remarks during the visit, Obasanjo argued that Tinubu had made a strong start and that Nigerians, particularly young people, should support the continuation of his reforms.

He cited progress on salary payments, infrastructure development and investment opportunities as gains that should be preserved.

“President Tinubu has started on a good note, making it necessary for Nigerians, particularly young people, to join hands to sustain the ongoing reforms and ensure continuity in governance,” Obasanjo said.

The PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, convened by former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, known as Tompolo, has been building state-level structures and distributing vehicles to coordinators to reach wards, polling units and households.

Asuku said Obasanjo’s experience in leadership and political mobilization would strengthen the group’s nationwide operations.
