The All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday, was joined by 22 State Governors under the aegis of Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), and Senators elected on its platform, to unanimously endorse President Bola Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, a decision made midway through the current administration’s tenure.
The ruling party hopes to present a united front, minimizing internal competition and potential factionalism ahead of the next election.
Chairman of the PGF and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma declared the endorsement at the APC National Summit held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Governor Uzodimma moved the motion for Tinubu’s adoption and it was seconded by the forum’s vice chairman, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State.
The Imo State Governor, while moving the motion, pledged the commitment of the Governors to mobilize resources and ensure victory for President Tinubu in their respective states.
Governor Uzodima’s motion was put to vote at the summit and with no objection by any of the Governors.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Governors, and members of the National Assembly attended the event.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also moved a separate motion of endorsement for Tinubu representing the position of the red chamber, citing the current administration’s bold reforms and growing public support.
Akpabio’s motion was immediately seconded by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
Senate President Akpabio praised Tinubu’s economic leadership, referencing recent commendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He said that the President has successfully steered the nation through difficult times.
“In 2023, he took on the toughest challenges. But in 2027, I see victory on the horizon,” Akpabio declared. “Mr. President has demonstrated uncommon political sagacity. Despite the turbulence, he has set Nigeria on the path of economic growth, as confirmed by the IMF. Nigerians, especially at the grassroots, are excited—and so are we in the National Assembly,” Akpabio noted.
The Senate President added that the overwhelming sentiment from Nigerians was that Tinubu deserves a second term, “We are not serving him impeachment papers—we are giving him an endorsement for continuity.”
Akpabio called on his colleagues to join in endorsing Presidenr Tinubu not just as the APC candidate but as a candidate for the entire nation.
“Because you have done a difficult job well, Nigerians want to reward you. I move that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu return as the unopposed candidate of the APC—and ultimately as Nigeria’s President for a second term in 2027,” Akpabio said.
In his remarks, Speaker Abbas, “On behalf of the 109 senators, 360 members of the House of Representatives, and 36 speakers of State Assemblies, I second this very important motion,” he said.
President Tinubu is now coast clear to face any presisential candidate that emerges from the group of opposition coalition drumming up to challenge his second term in 2027.
