President Bola Tinubu has transmitted seven nominees to the Senate for confirmation as Chairman and Board Members of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), while also seeking legislative approval for amendments to the National Postgraduate Medical College’s mandate.
In a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary, Tinubu nominated Dr. Abdullahi Maikano Saidu as Executive Chairman of the FRC, alongside six board members including: Mohammed Asmau, Mohammed Makama, Dr. Suleiman Gidado, Louis Ndukwe, Amaechi Ugwele and Olaniyi Onikola.
The President invoked Section 5(3) of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission Act, 2007, in seeking the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees, a step required before they can assume office.
Akpabio referred the nominations to the Senate Committee on Finance, directing the panel to report back within two weeks for legislative consideration.
The appointments follow Tinubu’s earlier approval in July constituting the FRC board, with Dr. Saidu named as Executive Chairman, as part of a broader set of federal agency appointments.
In a separate executive communication, Tinubu transmitted the National Postgraduate Medical College (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposing changes to the institution’s name, structure and academic responsibilities.
According to the President, the bill seeks to strengthen the college’s mandate for postgraduate training and professional examinations in medicine, dentistry and related disciplines across Nigeria, including expanding its powers to award Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in clinical medicine and dentistry.
Tinubu said the Federal Ministry of Justice had vetted and finalized the bill in line with drafting standards and constitutional provisions before transmission to the legislature.
The bill was referred to the Committee on Rules and Business for further action, as the Senate also moved to extend the implementation deadline for the 2025 capital budget to December 31, 2026.
