Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Shettima arrived with members of his entourage and was received by government officials and Nigerian Army personnel, according to a video posted on X by Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President’s Senior Special Assistant on media and communications.

Vice President Shettima left Abuja on September 20 at the President’s direction to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual UN gathering, where he delivered Nigeria’s national statement.

In the address, Nigeria renewed its call for reform of the UN Security Council, including permanent representation for Africa.

The country also urged fairer global financing, stronger support for climate action and deeper multilateral cooperation.

Shettima also participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, where he delivered a message from President Tinubu urging African countries to move beyond exporting raw minerals.

The president called for greater investment in processing, manufacturing and other forms of value addition.

At a high-level education-financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima said Nigeria viewed education as an investment in productivity, human capital and national prosperity.

He also expressed support for the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign.

The Vice President met with Nigerians living abroad and told them their investments, expertise and professional networks were important to the country’s development.

His other engagements included meetings with the new leadership of the Economic Community of West African States Commission (ECOWAS) and with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed.

The discussions covered development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace and security, according to the statement.

Shettima also reiterated President Tinubu’s call for a more representative and equitable international order, the statement further said.
