Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday presided over a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as leaders of the three tiers governments convened to coordinate economic policy.
Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya was among governors attending in person, while most other members joined the session virtually.
NewsQuest reports that NEC brings together the 36 STATE Governors, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and other senior officials, with the Vice President serving as chairman.
Established under the 1999 Constitution, the National Economic Council advises the president on the federation’s economic affairs and on measures needed to coordinate economic planning and programmes across federal and state governments.
The meeting signifies the council’s role as Nigeria’s principal forum for aligning fiscal and development priorities between Abuja and the states, particularly as policymakers confront pressures on revenue, growth and economic stability.
