Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, urged Federal Ministries and Chief Executives of Agencies to step up efforts to explain how President Bola Tinubu’s policies are benefiting ordinary Nigerians, describing the move as part of a broader push to convert policy gains into public understanding.
Speaking at a Federal Appointees Strategic Summit in Abuja, SGF Akume said the gathering was intended to “take stock” of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and assess whether government programmes have produced tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.
Chris Ugwuegbulam, Director of Information and Public Relations at the SGF’s office in a statement Wednesday that he summit drew Ministers, Special Advisers and Heads of agencies for a two-day review of implementation and outreach strategies, officials said.
“This is a strategic summit of top political appointees of government,” SGF Akume told attendees.
He said the breadth of representation reflected the “extensive responsibilities” of ministries, departments and agencies and stressed that the meeting was intended to identify achievements rather than evaluate individuals.
The call for clearer communication comes as the Tinubu administration pursues an agenda that includes subsidy reforms, fiscal consolidation and infrastructure investments—measures that have proved politically sensitive even as officials argue they are necessary for long-term stability.
NewsQuest reports that critics have recently accused government officials of insufficiently explaining the short-term costs to citizens, a gap Akume said the summit aims to close.
“We are not evaluating. What we are doing is taking stock of what has been achieved by each ministry and every agency, and how we are able to influence the lives of the ordinary people,” he said.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake, in his remarks said the summit offered ministries and agencies a platform to present a collective scorecard and to substantiate claims of progress with data and evidence.
“The administration has recorded significant and unprecedented strides since its inception,” Alake said, urging officials to ensure achievements are communicated beyond government circles.
Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning at the event, described the administration’s policy choices as deliberate responses to long-standing economic challenges.
He said President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda was the product of “careful consideration” and difficult decisions intended to alter Nigeria’s fiscal trajectory.
