The recent directive by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike to contractors in Abuja to engage in night construction works is fast helping to speed up the delivery of critical projects.
Wike’s decision to initiate night construction in the nation’s capital aligns with global best practices and is solely targeted at expediting ongoing projects across the city.
The desire of the former Rivers state Governor, who has deployed a renewed spirit of leadership in Abuja is also to minimize daytime traffic disruptions while major project works are being delivered by construction companies.
Since his assumption of office as FCT Minister, there have been significant infrastructure developments underway, with multiple road constructions and upgrades delivered timely, in many cases, even before the expiration of timelines.
Reports indicate that many of the contractors who are excited by the FCT administration’s compliance with the terms of the contracts have also been working around the clock to meet tight deadlines even without pressure from the government.
The timely completion of various road projects is undoubtedly, one of Minister Wike’s strategies, which he deployed to get major facilities commissioned by President Bola Tinubu during his one year in office, on 29th May 2024. The Minister also hopes to have many other development projects ready for President Tinubu’s second anniversary in office.
Minister Wike continues to emphasize his commitment to improving the quality of life for residents while positioning the nation’s capital among major global cities.
Only just less than a year ago, after President Tinubu commissioned several completed projects in the city, Minister Wike on Monday 20th May 2025, began another set of projects commissioning, this time, across the six Area Councils of the territory.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media, Lere Olayinka the administration said, the week-long commissioning will begin with the newly constructed 5km Naharati-River Ukya to Unguwan Hausawa Road with a three-span bridge in Abaji Area Council.
The administration also said on Tuesday, the 11km Yangoji-Sukuku-Ebo Road in Kwali Area Council will be inaugurated, followed by the rehabilitated 9km Paikon Kore-Ibwa Road in Gwagwalada Area Council on Wednesday.
“The Asphalt Carriageway from Garage Junction to the Local Education Authority Secretariat in Kuje Area Council is slated for commissioning on Thursday.
“On Friday, the Gaba-Tokulo Road in Bwari Area Council, featuring a two-span river bridge, will be unveiled.
“The final one will be on January 29, with the commissioning of the access road to Saburi I and II communities in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, stretching from ONEX to Old Keffi Road near Dei-Dei International Market,” Olayinka noted.
According to the media aide, other projects lined up for the commissioning program are the 11km Yangoji-Sukuku-Ebo Road, in Kwali Area Council, and the rehabilitated 9km Paikon Kore-Ibwa Road within Gwagwalada Area Council.
“Commissioning of the Asphalt Carriageway from Garage Junction to Local Education Authority Secretariat in Kuje Area Council is on Thursday, with that of the Gaba-Tokulo Road in Bwari Area Council, which was constructed with a two Span River Bridge is slated for Friday.
“The Access Road to Saburi I and II communities in the Abuja Municipal Area Council from ONEX to Old Keffi Road near Dei-Dei International Market will be commissioned on Wednesday, January 29,” the statement read.
The minister’s spokesperson also highlighted ongoing projects across the territory, including new roads to connect Kabusa-Takushara, Kabusa-Ketti, and the EFCC Academy site in Giri District, as well as the 15km road from the A2 Junction Abuja-Lokoja Road to Pia in Kwali Area Council.
Other key infrastructure projects include the reconstruction of the 25km Kwaita/Yebu Road, the rehabilitation of Old Ushafa-LUD Road, and several arterial and dual carriage roads aimed at enhancing mobility and economic growth in the capital city.
Night works have reached an advanced stage on the Karu/Jukwuyi/Karshi road in Abuja in line with the Ministerial directive as well.
With the amount of energy that Minister Wike has brought to the administration of Abuja, he undoubtedly remains a key figure in President Tinubu’s project delivery efforts.
No wonder, President Tinubu himself, had reason to praise the former Rivers state Governor for completing multiple infrastructure projects in just one year in office.
“We are filled with gratitude to Barrister Nyesom Wike and his team for their dedication and hard work in making this road a reality,” Tinubu said while commissioning key projects in the city last year.
Wike has since been known as ‘Mr. Infrastructure’ for the works he delivered in the oil-rich state, and for his significant contributions to infrastructural development in Nigeria.
While serving as Governor of Rivers state between 2015 and 2023, Wike although, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), oversaw the construction of 12 flyovers and extensive road rehabilitation, earning accolades including the ‘Distinguished Award in Infrastructure Delivery’ from an APC-led federal government.
The FCT Minister presently has his commitment to development aligned with Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” emphasizing infrastructure as essential for economic growth and connectivity across the country.
