Nigeria, US hold talks on expanding Aviation ties

Nigeria and the United States have opened talks to broaden cooperation in the aviation sector, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo said Saturday.

The Minister in a statement on his official X handle (formerly Twitter) said the move is part of a broader drive to attract investment and technical support as Abuja pursues reforms.

Minister Keyamo’s remarks followed a meeting earlier in the week with US diplomatic officials including Keith Heffern, chargé d’affaires at the American Mission to Nigeria, and Pamela Hack, country consular head.

He said senior officials from Nigeria’s aviation apparatus joined the talks, including the Ministry’s permanent secretary and the heads of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.

Minister Keyamo said the talks “focused on expanding cooperation between the aviation industries of both countries.”

The US delegation, Keyamo added, acknowledged reforms underway in Nigeria’s aviation sector under President Bola Tinubu’s administration and “commended the administration of President Bola Tinubu for some of the positive strides in the aviation sector,” pledging continued cooperation with the Nigerian government.

NewsQuest reports that the discussions come as Nigeria seeks to modernize airports, strengthen regulatory oversight and improve safety and airspace management—objectives that could open avenues for US technical assistance, training programmes and private-sector partnerships.
