The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will outline its final preparations for the 2027 general election at a high-level briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, as the country enters the last 100 days before presidential and National Assembly voting.
INEC said Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, will lead a combined World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting starting at 10 a.m. at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre (BAT-ICC) in Abuja.
Attendance is by invitation only, with accredited media and guests required to present invitation cards or accreditation badges at security checkpoints.
The commission said the session will be broadcast live on major national television networks and streamed on its official social media platforms.
INEC said the briefing will provide updates on:
The voters’ register, including verification and PVC collection logistics,
candidate nominations and the publication of final lists,
deployment of election materials and ad‑hoc personnel,
measures to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, including technology testing and security coordination.
The commission has previously stressed that the credibility of the voters’ register is central to public confidence in the elections.
INEC has also said it is testing its Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and plans a mock election in November as part of its readiness drive.
The stakeholders’ meeting will bring together:
Political party leaders,
security agencies under the Inter‑Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES),
members of the diplomatic corps and development partners,
civil society organisations and election observer groups,
disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations, and media executives.
INEC described the gathering as part of its commitment to “absolute transparency, proactive public communication, and collaborative engagement with key actors in the electoral ecosystem.”
INEC has published a timetable for the 2027 general elections, with the presidential and National Assembly polls initially set for February 20, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections for March 6, 2027.
Following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, the commission later revised the schedule, moving the presidential and National Assembly elections to January 16, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections to February 6, 2027.
The commission said the adjustments were necessary to align with new statutory timelines under the revised electoral law.
In recent weeks, INEC has directed officials to close operational gaps and strengthen neutrality ahead of the polls, while announcing that PVC collection would begin on October 9, 2026.
The commission has also warned against fraudulent online voter registration portals, noting that the Continuous Voter Registration exercise ended on July 26, 2026.
INEC has said it will deploy more than 1.4 million ad‑hoc personnel for the 2027 elections and has reopened its online portal for their recruitment.
