President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday inaugurated three major gas plant projects in Imo and Delta States, in high hopes to boost the country’s domestic supply with at least, 500million cubic feet of gas.
“It is pleasing that approximately 500MMscf of gas in aggregate would be supplied to the domestic market from these two Gas Processing Plants, which represents over 25 percent incremental growth in gas supply,” the President noted during the virtual launch at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to President Tinubu, the projects are fully in line with the decade of gas initiative, and the Federal Government’s quest to grow value from the nation’s abundant gas assets while concurrently eliminating gas flaring and accelerating industrialization.
“I wish to assure investors in the energy space that this is an investment enabling government and we will not relent in facilitating the ease of doing business,” he said.
The President expressed the resolve of his government to continue with the provision of support in deepening domestic gas utilization, to increase national power generation capacity, revitalize industries and create multiple job opportunities for economic growth.
The projects commissioned by the President are the expanded AHL Gas Processing Plant; the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, and the 23.3km ANOH to Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Custody Transfer Metering Station Gas Pipeline in Imo and Delta States.

Specifically, the 1200 MMscfd ANOH-OBJ CTMS gas pipeline project located in
Assa, Ohaji/Egbema local government in Imo State, is designed to evacuate dry gas from the Assa North-Ohaji South (ANOH) primary treatment facility (PTF) to OB3 custody transfer metering section (CTMS) for delivery into OB3 pipeline.
According to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the ANOH Gas processing plant on the other hand, which is a 300 million standard cubic feet of natural gas (300MMscfd) gas processing plant, will receive wet unprocessed gas from the reservoirs in the Assa North-Ohaji South gas field for processing to produce three products, dry gas as fuel for power plants in the country, condensate which is to be channelled to Bonny terminal for export, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), for the domestic market.
“In practical terms this is more gas to the Power Sector, Gas-Based Industries and other critical segments of the economy,” the President added.
Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPCL, Mele Kyari in his remark during the launch said one of the newly commissioned projects is the
AHL Gas processing plants – AHL GPP2 Ogbe-Ani community in Delta State, which is a 200 million standard cubic feet capacity gas processing plant with all necessary Utility and Storage facilities, connecting pipelines, truck loading facilities, to evacuate Lean Gas and Hydrocarbon Liquid Products.
The AHL Gas processing plant, a joint venture project, is designed to receive wet feed gas and processes the same to produce three products, Dry Lean gas which can be used as Fuel for power plants in the country, Propane and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), for the domestic market.
The Federal Government through the launch of these projects hopes to achieve significant drop in gas flaring in line with its target towards supporting a cleaner energy global environment.
According to the NNPC boss, the launch demonstrates the commitment of the government to boost gas supply and investment growth in the country.
Kyari while thanking President Tinubu for showing strong commitment for the gas sector development, said that the three infrastructure projects will enable additional gas processing capacity and also increase the supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), thereby reducing the dependency on importation.
“Mr. President, we want to re-assure you that as part of our mandate, NNPCL is committed to maintaining energy security by continuing to execute more strategic gas projects for the benefit of our country,” the GCEO added.
Records indicate that Nigeria is endowed with significant natural gas resources of over 209 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, and with the potential to grow to over 600trillion cubic feet.
