FG moves to upgrade 13 police training facilities nationwide, as economic reforms take center stage at NEC chaired by Shettima

The Federal Government on Thursday awarded contracts to rehabilitate 13 police training institutions nationwide, a move intended to accelerate recruitment and improve the readiness of new Nigeria Police Force personnel.

The one-off rehabilitation work is scheduled for completion within three weeks to ready the facilities ahead of planned training programmes.

The decision is part of the outcomes of the to the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

A statement by the Senior Special on Media and Communication to the Vice President Stanley Nkwocha said the infrastructure drive is also part of a broader effort to strengthen policing capacity by addressing what they described as critical deficiencies in training infrastructure that have hampered recruitment and professional preparation.

The statement said NEC also devoted much of its time to the government’s economic-reform agenda.

According to Nkwocha during the meeting Shettima urged council members to maintain momentum on reforms until macroeconomic gains translate into tangible improvements for households, businesses and state governments.

“There is no doubt that a serious government is measured by the matters it refuses to abandon,” he said, adding that policy continuity, not announcements alone, is what secures public confidence.

He warned that gains in revenue, debt management, production and investment would be hollow unless they resulted in jobs, higher purchasing power and stronger subnational economies.

“Macroeconomic progress must therefore continue its passage into jobs, purchasing power, business confidence and stronger subnational economies, because numbers become politically meaningful when citizens recognise themselves in their improvement,” Shettima said.

He urged the council to avoid abandoning earlier commitments in favor of new priorities, calling continuity “a form of accountability.”

The Vice President said President Bola Tinubu charged NEC with making federal-state cooperation more productive so that policies produce visible outcomes for Nigerians.

NEC also approved a Revised National Social Protection Policy for 2026–2030 and urged states to align their social-protection legislation, budgets and implementation plans with the national framework.

The policy, presented by Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu, proposes a National Social Protection Council to oversee coordination and implementation.

The council would be chaired by the Vice President and include the ministers of budget, labour, and humanitarian affairs as vice chairmen, with six Governors representing the country’s geopolitical zones as members; the Budget Ministry would serve as secretariat.
