Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh on Sunday resigned his appointment after recent controversial attempts for his impeachment.
In a letter to the Clerk of the Assembly and personally signed, Honourable Dajoh said that his decision was in good faith and in the best interest of Benue State.
A senior aide to the Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia who prefers not to be quoted in print because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed the development to NewsQuest, noting that the Speaker had seen his impeachment imminent and chose to take the honourable line of resignation.
But in a letter seen by our correspondent, Dajoh wrote, “I write to resign my position as the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly effective today, 24th August 2025.
“This is done in good faith in the best interest of the State,” the letter said.
Following an earlier attempt for his impeachment last week, four lawmakers accused of the plot were suspended from the Assembly for three months after being accused of attempting to cause chaos in the State legislature.
The suspended lawmakers include Alfred Aondoaver Emberga, Shimawua Emmanuel, Cyril Ikong, and Abu Umoru.
The Speaker in the Sunday resignation letter however, expressed appreciation to his colleagues for the opportunity to serve in the capacity and promised to commit the rest of his tenure in the parliament as a lawmaker representing Gboko West State constituency.
Governor Alia had denied any involvement in the alleged plot to impeach or remove Speaker Dajoh.
The Governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Tersoo Kula affirmed his respect for the rule of law and the separation of powers and emphasized his cordial working relationship with the Assembly led by Dajoh.
