The Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, is seeking partnerships with American universities to expand practical training in fields including robotics, biotechnology, data science and advanced manufacturing, as the country works to align higher education with the demands of a digital economy.

The minister, who led a delegation to Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania, held discussions with university President Christopher M.o Reber and other senior officials on developing transnational education partnerships while promoting Science , Technology, Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) in Nigerian universities.

The visit took place ahead of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) and forms part of the ministry’s effort to connect Nigeria’s higher-education system with international expertise, applied research and industry-focused training.

During the visit, Dr. Alausa toured Harrisburg’s laboratories and applied-learning facilities.

Students demonstrated projects in advanced manufacturing, robotics, cybersecurity, data analytics, biotechnology, health sciences and interactive media.

The demonstrations showcased an education model that combines classroom instruction with experimentation, research and problem-solving.

He stated that the approach is designed to help students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges—an area officials say requires greater attention across the country’s universities.

Dr. Alausa said Nigeria views transnational education as a way to build structured academic and institutional links between Nigerian universities and reputable foreign institutions.

“The National Universities Commission has established a framework covering joint, twinning and articulation programmes, branch campuses, online and blended learning, franchised programmes, joint research initiatives, faculty and student exchanges”, he added.

The minister said such partnerships should go beyond providing Nigerian students with access to foreign qualifications.

“Properly designed programmes”, he said, could support knowledge exchange, research and innovation, faculty development, technology transfer and closer cooperation between universities and industry.

The discussions with Harrisburg University focused on artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, robotics, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology and health sciences, among other emerging fields.

He said partnership in these areas could improve laboratory-based instruction, strengthen faculty expertise, expand research capacity and produce graduates whose skills better match the needs of employers.

Dr. Alausa also met with Nigerian and other African students at the university, highlighting the importance of maintaining academic and cultural ties between African students abroad and institutions on the continent.

The meeting reflected the theme of the 2026 African Cultural Festival (ACF), “The Great Reunion: Culture, Education, and Collaboration,” which emphasizes education and cultural exchange as tools for strengthening ties among Africans and supporting shared development goals.

Present at the meeting includes; David Clickner, Harrisburg University’s Chief Strategy Officer; Richard Pitts Jr., Chairman of the Department of Manufacturing Systems; Luanne Reese Hutchinson, Executive Director of the Strategic Healthcare Initiative; Wole Adeniyi of the African Cultural Festival; and Nigerian and other African students.

The visit underscores the ministry’s objective of ensuring that international academic relationships produce measurable benefits for Nigerian students, universities and the broader economy.

Dr. Alausa said the Federal Ministry of Education would continue pursuing reforms and international partnerships under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with a focus on skills development, innovation and practical education.

He said the goal is to equip Nigerian students with the knowledge, technical competencies and technological skills needed to drive innovation, support economic growth and compete in the global knowledge economy.
