First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Friday inaugurated a renovated alternative high school for girls in Agboju, Amuwo-Odofin, highlighting it as a wider drive to restore educational opportunities for young women whose studies were interrupted by pregnancy, economic hardship or other life events.
The facility, opened more than a decade after the school’s 2007 founding under then‑Governor Bola Tinubu, was refurbished with support from the Universal Basic Education Commission.
A statement by Kwapchi Bata Hamman, Special Assistant to the President (Media & ICT), Office of the Vice President said the complex includes two blocks with more than 26 classrooms, agriculture, physics and biology laboratories, cosmetology and garment‑making workshops, a catering and home‑economics suite, a hairdressing unit, an ICT centre and a library.
Represented at the ceremony by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, Mrs. Tinubu described the project as part of a national effort to give girls “a second chance” to complete secondary education and gain vocational skills.
She praised UBEC Executive Secretary Dr. Aisha Garba for the commission’s role in the renovation and noted that similar projects are underway elsewhere in Lagos State, including a new facility in Ikorodu.
“The establishment of this school was founded on the conviction that no girl or woman should be denied the opportunity to reach her full potential,” Mrs. Tinubu said, urging state authorities to open an additional alternative high school in Lagos Central so each senatorial district would have one.
Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo‑Olu, wife of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, who stood in for her husband, called the reopening a restoration of dignity and opportunity for young women, adding that “educating a girl is educating a family, a community and a nation.”
UBEC said the Agboju renovation is part of the federal government’s renewed focus on alternative access to education and skills development.
