Minister Wike – True opposition requires electoral wins, not emergency coalitions

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Friday said that political credibility as an opposition force comes from ballot-box victories, not hasty alliances or bold talk.

Speaking at the PDP headquarters Wadata House in Abuja, Minister Wike dismissed smaller parties claiming opposition leadership.

“You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election,” he said.

“Those who say they are leading the opposition have not contested any election successfully.”

The FCT Minister comments bring to fore, the jostling for position ahead of the nation’s 2027 elections, as stakeholders realign amid political parties’ internal turmoil.

Minister Wike pledged loyalty to the PDP’s new National Working Committee (NWC), urging reconciliation with defectors lured by ticket opportunities. “Reach out to them,” he advised.

“Most are concerned about opportunities, including tickets. You know what to do.”

The PDP, main opposition, has battled crises but is stabilizing, Wike said.

He expressed confidence in ongoing court wins and called for focus: “We have defeated them at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. The same God will see us through. Stay focused and work as a team.”

PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed in his remarks, vowed to rebuild trust and aim higher.

“We have capable hands and we are determined to lead the party to a higher level,” he said.

National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu hailed Minister Wike’s visit as a morale booster.

NewsQuest reports that overture signals the PDP’s renewed drive to reclaim opposition dominance amid shifting alliances.
