2027: Why APC’s Renewed Hope Ambassadors bet big on grass roots

In the high-stakes arena of modern politics, grassroots mobilisation has become the great equaliser, a tool to pierce the bubble of elite power plays and rally ordinary voters. From the American Democrats’ door-knocking drives to Labour’s community organising in the United Kingdom (UK), success often hinges on turning abstract policy into tangible local wins.

As Nigeria races toward its 2027 general elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is leaving little to chance. With campaign activities already underway under guidelines from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), President Bola Tinubu’s party is mounting an aggressive grassroots push to tout its record and counter opposition narratives.

At the heart of this effort is the Renewed Hope Ambassadors network, led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.  The Imo State Governor was appointed by President Tinubu in November 2025 as a party outreach National Coordinator and Director-General of the Ambassadors.

Governor Uzodimma who also chairs the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) — is tasked with evangelizing the President’s Renewed Hope agenda at the most local levels. The President and his team, obviously understand the urgency of building up grassroots support for his policies. Uzodimma presides over a machinery that would be reeling out the government’s achievements in its delivery of campaign promises to Nigerians since taking over power in 2023.

The timing feels deliberate. It dovetails with the Federal Government’s Ward Development Programme, approved in July 2025 and rolled out across Nigeria’s 8,809 wards. Aimed at channeling macroeconomic reforms into community-level action, the initiative targets at least 1,000 people per ward for job creation, poverty alleviation, food security, and social protections.

Officially known as the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RHWDP), the initiative is already mapping local opportunities and supporting small businesses in all 774 local government areas, in a “bottom-up” approach championed by the President and his handlers.

On Saturday, Governor Uzodimma issued marching orders to APC state and zonal coordinators during the network’s fourth strategic meeting in Abuja. “One Party, One Message, One Mobilization Framework,” remaining the ultimate goal of the Renewed Hope ‘movement’ as a key strategy.

Governor Uzodimma at the Saturday meeting urged his colleagues’ Ambassadors to amplify President Tinubu’s administration’s achievements amid what he called opposition-fueled misinformation.

Speaking to about 100 States and Zonal Coordinators, Governor Uzodimma credited President Tinubu’s bold reforms — including subsidy removal, which past presidents had shied away from — for tangible gains.

Rice prices, he noted, have fallen from nearly 120,000 naira per bag two years ago, to around 50,000 naira today. Over a million students, he noted, are now receiving loans through the National Education Loan Fund, a programme unthinkable without those changes.

“We must create national awareness, help citizens understand the reasons for the President’s reforms, educate them on their necessity, and inform them of the benefits as they trickle down,” Governor Uzodimma said.

Without such outreach, he warned, “this government will be misunderstood.”

To support Governor Uzodimma as allies in the aggressive political push, is Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State. Governor Sani was appointed as a Renewed Hope Ambassador in February this year for his organisational skills, with the appointment taking immediate effect.

In his role as Deputy Director-General, the Kaduna State Governor will also bring his wealth of experience in promoting APC programmes, policies, and achievements nationwide to build support ahead of the 2027 elections.

At the Saturday’s meeting of the network, Governor Sani called for urgent need in spotlighting subnational successes such as primary health care upgrades across the country.

The Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya a Renewed Hope Ambassador himself was also appointed by the President – recognizing his leadership in the Northern Governors’ Forum and mobilization skills ahead of 2027 elections.

Governor Yahaya who serves as Secretary of the network, has advocated for strong synergy in tackling insecurity in the northeast – an intervention he believes would also help bolster the APC administration’s chances in future elections.

With 31 APC Governors — facilitated by recent defections and providing a formidable base, the Renewed Hope group exudes some high levels of confidence for the future. Yet the stakes are high.

President Tinubu’s re-election bid will no doubt require some convincing of voters that sacrifices from reforms have yielded results, from economic repositioning to social investments.

In Nigeria, where turnout in elections often lags and cynicism runs deep, the Ambassadors’ door-to-door urgency could prove decisive. For now, the network is all in, betting that persistent, unified messaging will foster the voter ownership needed to secure victory at the polls.

Without real campaigning yet, and in keeping to the rules of the electoral process, all the Renewed Hope Ambassadors APC will move ahead with a one drive enlightenment to strengthen support for the party in disseminating the “Renewed Hope” agenda, while countering the opposition ahead of 2027.
