2025 Budget: Tinubu signs extension bill into law

President Bola Tinubu has signed the bill extending the implementation period for amended 2025 capital budget by three months, giving government agencies until December 31, 2026, to spend funds already approved for projects.

The extension moves the deadline from September 30 and marks the fourth time lawmakers have postponed the expiration of the capital budget, according to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

Bayo Onanuga, President
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on information and strategy, said the president signed the measure after the Senate and House of Representatives passed it in what he described as a swift legislative process.

The extension is intended to give ministries, departments and agencies more time to complete ongoing capital projects, Onanuga said.

“It ensures that funds already appropriated are fully put to work for Nigerians, without disrupting critical programmes,” he said in the statement.

President Tinubu praised the National Assembly for its prompt consideration of the bill, calling it evidence of cooperation between the executive and legislative chambers.

Bamidele said the additional time was necessary because government projects often face delays related to procurement, contract execution, mobilisation, certification of completed work and payments.

The National Assembly first extended the capital-budget deadline on December 23, 2025, moving it to March 31, 2026, after repealing and reenacting the 2024 and 2025 appropriation laws.

Lawmakers subsequently extended the deadline from March 31 to June 30 and then from June 30 to Sept. 30.

When the latest extension was approved,
Bamidele said implementation of capital projects under the 2025 Appropriation Act had yet to reach an optimal level.
