The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Dr. Amos Dangut as its Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, placing a Nigerian education administrator with more than two decades of experience in examination management at the helm of the regional testing body.
Dangut, who served as head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026, assumed his new position on October 1.
He will serve a five-year term through September 2031, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.
The appointment was ratified by WAEC’s governing Council at its 74th annual meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March, according to a statement issued Thursday by Demianus G. Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC headquarters in Accra.
Dangut joined WAEC in 1998, after beginning his career in education at St. Louis College Jos in 1994.

During his tenure as head of the Nigeria National Office, he led the rollout of computer-based versions of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, serialized question papers and a digital electronic marking system.
He also oversaw the expansion of the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive, as well as digital systems for examination logistics and examiner monitoring.
Born October 2, 1967, Dangut earned a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, specializing in animal production, in 1991.
He later obtained a master’s degree in animal science in 1994, a doctorate in animal science in 2017 and a master’s degree in education administration and planning in 2020.

He has also represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.
Dangut currently represents the West African sub-region on the executive board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
