Ondo State’s University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) said that the State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has materially improved compensation for its clinical staff, a move hospital officials credited with raising morale and drawing specialists to the facility.

In a statement signed by Chief Medical Director Professor Olumide Gbala, the hospital said the governor approved increases to the Professional Table Allowance and Specialist Allowance for workers under the CONMESS and CONHESS salary structures.

The measures, the statement said, make Ondo one of the first states nationwide—and the first in the South-West—to adopt the revised welfare package.

“The enhanced allowances have already begun attracting consultants and other highly skilled healthcare professionals from across the country,” Gbala said, adding that UNIMEDTH has recorded its largest influx of specialists since the hospital opened eight years ago.

NewsQuest reports that hospital officials also pointed to a string of other investments they said demonstrated the administration’s focus on health care: the release of the Medical Residency Training Fund, expanded internship opportunities, and the permanent hiring of more than 100 security staff.

UNIMEDTH said it has procured a suite of new diagnostic and surgical equipment, including a 1.5‑Tesla MRI, a 160‑slice CT scanner, a 3D digital mammography system, a 4D ultrasound machine, and modern theatre, endoscopy, ophthalmology and ENT instruments. Installation is expected to begin after recent technical assessments by equipment supplier JNCI Group, the statement said.

Gbala noted recent facility upgrades, including the relocation of the ophthalmology department to a new building and an ongoing effort to raise neonatal services to Level IV neonatal intensive‑care status. He said the hospital plans to start a neonatal nursing training programme in partnership with the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

The statement also highlighted maternal‑health initiatives supported by the governor: the Abiyamo Safe Motherhood Scheme and a Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care programme that provide free deliveries and Caesarean sections for pregnant women.

UNIMEDTH welcomed the governor’s pledge to build modern residential quarters for resident doctors, calling the project “another major step” toward strengthening specialist training and emergency care.

“We remain committed to providing quality, patient‑centred healthcare,” Gbala said, thanking Aiyedatiwa for what the hospital described as visionary leadership.
