United States of American President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, as a “respected woman” expressing delight at her attendance at the country’s national prayer breakfast in Washington DC.

“We are honoured to be joined today by the First Lady of Nigeria (Remi Tinubu), who also happens to serve as a Christian pastor at the largest church in Nigeria, very respected woman…. it’s a great honour. Thank you very much,” Trump said in a video of the event.

The Wife of President joined faith leaders and dignitaries at the annual event, which brings together political figures for interfaith reflection.

NewsQuest reports that Trump’s comments, delivered during the gathering, underscored strengthening ties between the US and Nigeria amid ongoing diplomatic engagements.

The action of the American President is a visible diplomatic gesture toward Nigeria’s presidency.

Our correspondent gathered that by highlighting Mrs. Tinubu as a Christian pastor and “respected” figure, it frames her as a moral and faith leader, not just a political spouse, which can resonate with domestic audiences in the country, especially religious and pro‑government supporters.

The American leader’s action may also signal cordial ties between the Trump administration and the Tinubu administration going forward, and can be used in the country to project international recognition of the First Lady and, by extension, of the government.
