President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday appealed for national unity, peace and a “moral renewal” as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins.

The President also called on people of all faiths to back efforts to stabilise the country.

Speaking at the opening of this year’s Tafsir session at the State House Mosque in Abuja, President Tinubu highlighted the overlap with the Christian season of Lent, saying it served as a “profound reminder” of shared values including sacrifice, discipline, prayer and self-denial.

Fasting, he said, must extend beyond abstaining from food and drink to embody kindness, forgiveness, good deeds and love for humanity.

He urged Nigerians regardless of religion to pray for peace and support government drives against terrorism, banditry and other security threats that continue to plague parts of the country.

In his remarks earlier, the chief imam of the State House Mosque, Sheikh Abdulwahid Suleiman, thanked God for allowing the faithful to witness another Ramadan—the month the Qur’an was revealed—and praised Tinubu’s leadership.

Suleiman prayed for divine forgiveness for worshippers, guidance and wisdom for the president and his team, and peace, stability and prosperity for all Nigerians.
