President Bola Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria this week for events marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, his spokesman said Sunday.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy in a post on X said that Tinubu would also attend the Lagos premiere of MKO, a documentary on the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
The documentary recounts the June 12, 1993, presidential election, its annulment by the military government and the pro-democracy campaign that followed.
It is scheduled to premiere October 1 at the National Theatre in Lagos, where President Tinubu is expected to serve as chief host.
NewsQuest reports that Onanuga’s statement came in response to questions and criticism over the President’s prolonged stay outside the country.
“President Tinubu is hale and hearty,” Onanuga said, describing the trip as a working vacation.
“In this digital age, he does not need to be physically present in Abuja to do the work for which he was elected in 2023.”
President Tinubu, who took office in May 2023, has remained engaged in government business during the trip, Onanuga said.
