President Bola Tinubu on Monday welcomed a modest acceleration in the nation’s global economic growth, saying recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics validated policy moves his administration began after taking office in 2023.

The NBS reported that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded 4.43% in the second quarter of 2026 from the same period a year earlier, up from 4.23% growth in the second quarter of 2025.

The NBS said agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services all contributed to the rise, with services remaining the largest share of aggregate output.

Measured in nominal terms, GDP was N119.27 trillion in the quarter, an 18.4% increase from N100.7 trillion a year earlier.

The President highlighted a list of administration achievements, including higher foreign-exchange reserves—at their highest level in 17 years—improved sovereign credit ratings, increased oil and gas production, and a return of investors.

He also pointed to infrastructure projects under way and a lull in university strikes, adding that student loans and targeted credit programmes were widening access to education and finance.

Tinubu said the government would soon roll out measures aimed at easing pressure on vulnerable households, including cheaper transport, boosted food production and relief programmes. “

“We are fully committed to translating consistent, stronger economic performance into better microeconomic outcomes for our citizens,” he said, urging vigilance to keep the gains “irreversible.”

NewsQuest reports that the statement came as the opposition has criticized the administration’s policy direction and pledged to reverse some reforms if returned to power.

President Tinubu has however sought to contrast that stance with his government’s record, saying the “Renewed Hope Agenda” was beginning to show
