President Tinubu’s administration has approved ₦46 billion for reconstruction of the second runway at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo who disclosed said the move is aimed at boosting the airport’s competitiveness and operational capacity.
At a ceremony to commission the remodeled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the Kano airport, Keyamo, said the President had “earmarked Kano Airport for major upgrades” and authorized the funding for runway resurfacing and reconstruction.
Tunde Moshood, the Minister’s media aide in a statement quoted Keyamo as saying “The President has approved the sum of ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,”.
He added that the investments form part of what he called the federal government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” to modernize the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
Keyamo said Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje—appointed by President Tinubu to chair the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s governing board—was selected for the role because of his “vision” for aviation and Kano.
Keyamo also said work has begun on upgrades to the airport’s Hajj terminal, with contractors already on site.
He described the projects as part of broader efforts to improve safety, service delivery and operational efficiency across Nigeria’s airports.
The event drew senior aviation officials and Kano state representatives, including FAAN managing director Olubunmi Kuku and the state transport commissioner, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
NewsQuest reports that the domestic terminal was renamed for Mallam Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo, described in the statement as an aviation pioneer and one of Kano’s “most illustrious sons.”
Ms. Kuku praised the upgrade as evidence of FAAN’s commitment to improving passenger experience, while Dr. Ganduje lauded the federal government’s prioritization of aviation investment in northern Nigeria.
