The Presidency has dismissed allegations by former Anambra Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi that the Federal Government is targeting him, calling the claims politically motivated and without evidence.

In a statement, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy said Obi’s account of an airport incident involving his vehicle and recent comments about his personal safety ahead of the 2027 election were “misleading.”

Onanuga suggested the episode may have stemmed from a parking regulation breach and should not be framed as government action.

“The claim that he may not be alive for the January 2027 election and that people are being pressured not to invite him to social events is nothing more than a fabricated narrative,” the statement read.

Onanuga accused Obi of repeating allegations against the administration without producing evidence and of seeking sympathy to deflect from what he described as Mr. Obi’s “credibility deficit.”

The presidential aide also addressed Mr. Obi’s interest in Fidelity Bank, saying the financial institution continues to perform well under the current economic reforms and rejecting suggestions that it is being pursued by the government.

“The government is certainly not targeting the bank,” the statement said.

Onanuga described  the administration’s priorities as focused on economic reform rather than political infighting.

“The Tinubu government remains fully focused on consolidating its historic and beneficial reforms for the good of all Nigerians,” he said, adding that it had “neither the time nor the inclination” to be distracted by Mr. Obi’s “self-serving narratives.”
