The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the rising cases of attacks on journalists in the line of duty, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of perpetrators to end impunity against media professionals.
The union called on the Federal Government and security agencies to end attacks on journalists, citing continued intimidation, arbitrary arrests, physical assaults and online harassment.
NUJ National President Alhassan Yahya made the appeal in a statement marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, observed November 2.
He said journalists continue to face violence and other forms of intimidation while carrying out their professional duties.
“Failure to prosecute those responsible for such attacks poses a serious threat to press freedom, undermines the rule of law and weakens democratic governance,” Yahya said.
The union’s appeal underscores growing concern about the safety of journalists in Nigeria, where media professionals say they face risks ranging from physical violence to cyberbullying and arbitrary detention.
The NUJ urged security agencies to respect journalists’ constitutional role and treat the media as partners in promoting accountability and democracy.
It also called on government institutions, media organisations, civil-society groups and international partners to establish effective safety mechanisms and emergency-support systems for journalists, particularly those working in high-risk areas.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and protecting media professionals.
“No journalist should have to risk their safety, freedom or life for reporting the truth,” the NUJ president said.
