INEC chairman lauds situation room to smooth elections, boost credibility

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is treating this weekend’s bye-elections in four states as a critical dry run for the 2027 general elections, using the contests to stress-test logistics, technology and field operations ahead of the nationwide polls.

Prof. Joash Amupitan, chairman of the Commission said the exercises in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta offered “indispensable operational lessons” as the commission maps its roadmap to 2027.

Speaking from INEC’s National Situation Room at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Saturday, Amupitan said bye-elections must not be dismissed as routine, but viewed as essential audits of the commission’s readiness.

The commission held five legislative bye-elections across the four states: Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.

Voting ran from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m in affected polling units, with security agencies imposing movement restrictions in some areas to safeguard the process.

Amupitan said INEC would use the results of Saturday’s polls to evaluate its logistics framework, technological deployment and administrative preparedness—areas that will be pivotal in 2027.

He noted that some operational challenges identified before the elections were addressed promptly, and that the National Situation Room was being used to monitor developments in real time and resolve issues that could disrupt the smooth conduct of the polls.

“Every election is a critical component of our broader preparations for the 2027 General Election,” the INEC chairman said in a statement issued by his media adviser, Adedayo Oketola.

“We will continue to improve our processes to achieve greater efficiency and build public confidence in future elections”,the statement said.

National Commissioners and senior INEC officials joined the chairman in monitoring reports from the various locations, underscoring the commission’s push to treat off-cycle contests as integral to its 2027 planning rather than isolated events.
