First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, on Friday urged a renewed focus on prevention in the fight against drug abuse and organized crime, aligning her message with the United Nations’ 2026 campaign slogan: “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime.”

In a statement marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Senator Tinubu said prevention—through education, public awareness, strengthened family support and community engagement—remained among the most effective tools to stem substance misuse and weaken criminal networks that exploit vulnerable populations.

“The evidence is clear: investing in prevention disrupts the pathways that lead children and young people into substance abuse and organized crime,” the First Lady said.

She called on governments, families, schools, faith-based groups and civil-society organizations to deepen collaboration.

“We must create safe, inclusive and supportive environments where every child and young person can thrive, realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.”

The message is part of a shift in discourse among policymakers and advocates who argue that supply-side enforcement alone cannot suffocate illicit markets without concurrent investment in education, social services and community-based interventions.

International agencies have increasingly highlighted prevention programs—ranging from school curricula on substance risks to family-strengthening initiatives—as cost-effective measures that reduce long-term social and economic harms.

First Lady Tinubu urged sustained advocacy and expanded care networks to buttress those preventive measures, framing the approach as a shared responsibility that crosses public and private lines.

NewsQuest reports that her remarks come as Nigeria continues to contend with evolving drug-trafficking routes and the domestic public-health consequences of substance abuse, particularly among youth in urban and peri-urban areas.

“Breaking the cycle requires patience, resources and a united front,” she said, closing her message with a call for ongoing commitment from all sectors of society.

“Happy International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026.”

The First Lady’s remarks echoes global calls for integrated strategies that combine prevention, treatment and enforcement to reduce demand and disrupt criminal enterprises at their roots.
