Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has declared his unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, saying he is ready to take a political bullet for the president.
Speaking in a television interview, Sani said he had no apology for backing Tinubu despite public discontent over economic hardship, insisting that he would be vindicated and that his loyalty was based on conviction and their shared pro-democracy history dating back to 1994.
“I have no apology supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and I will continue to support him till the last minute,” Sani said.
Asked whether he was to take a political risk for the president, he said he expected to be vindicated.
Sani traced his relationship with Tinubu to 1994, when both were involved in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement during military rule.
He said Tinubu’s association with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and his support for activists—some of whom went into exile—shaped the governor’s view of him.
The governor also pointed to federal projects and appointments in Kaduna, including four federal university initiatives and the reconstruction of the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari road.
He said those benefits accrued to the state, not to him personally.
On whether northern voters would back Tinubu despite widespread economic strain, Sani said opposition parties must offer a credible alternative rather than simply urging Nigerians to reject the president.
“When you say don’t vote for Asiwaju, you must bring an alternative,” he said.
He argued that poverty in northern Nigeria predated the Tinubu administration and compared the region’s difficulties to a neglected building that had deteriorated beyond easy repair.
He urged northern leaders to confront their own record.
“The northerners are their own problem,” Sani said.
The governor acknowledged continuing insecurity in Kaduna, particularly attacks in Millennium City.
He said he had discussed the situation with military and security officials and that plans were under way to increase the security presence there.
His comments come as political positioning intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections, with economic hardship, insecurity and the Tinubu administration’s record expected to dominate the campaign.
Sani has previously predicted that Tinubu would win decisively in Kaduna, saying no opposition candidate should receive even 25% of the state’s votes.
