2027: INEC grants online access to voters’ register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made the Preliminary Register of Voters for the 2027 general election available online following public outcry over accessibility, saying Nigerians can now inspect the register through its portal ahead of the publication of the final register.

The move comes as the commission processes objections ahead of the final register’s scheduled release on December 15, 2026.

INEC said the preliminary register—previously displayed at registration areas nationwide from October 9 to 15—can now be viewed at https://display.inecnigeria.org.

Mohammed Kudu Haruna, chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, announced the decision in a statement, saying it responded to concerns from Nigerians and other stakeholders about online access.

The commission framed the online publication as a complement to the physical exercise, intended to widen access to the same list of voters.

INEC conducted the physical display under Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026, allowing registered voters to inspect their details and lodge claims or objections.

The commission said it continues to process those claims and objections as it prepares to certify and publish the final register on December 15, 2026.

The online release gives voters who missed the in-person display another opportunity to verify their registration details before the final list is finalized.

INEC described the decision as part of its commitment to transparency, accessibility, and public confidence in the electoral process.

The publication follows criticism that the commission had not made the preliminary register available online within the statutory window, even as the physical display proceeded.

The commission reiterated its commitment to accountability and to implementing the Electoral Act, 2026, as it prepares for the 2027 general election.
