President Bola Tinubu has nominated four new National Commissioners and two new Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), moving to fill existing vacancies ahead of 2027 general elections.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga disclosed this Friday in a statement.

According to the statement, the nominees would undergo screening before confirmation by the Senate in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Tinubu also reappointed Dr. Bala Bila as INEC’s National Commissioner representing the Northeast.

The new National Commissioner nominees are Professor Mustapha Aliu for the Northwest, replacing Professor Abdullahi Zuru, the statement reads.

Also, Bashir Muhammed Umar for the North Central zone, replacing Professor Muhammad Adamu.

The President nominated Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, currently Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, as National Commissioner for the Southwest.

Babalola would succeed Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure ends October 24, he stated.

For the resident electoral commissioner positions, Tinubu nominated Dr. Samuel Akinleye, a retired permanent secretary, for Ekiti State, and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi of Jigawa State, who would replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.

Tinubu asked the Senate to move quickly on the confirmations, citing the approaching January general elections.
