NASS will sustain support for Tinubu – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said the National Assembly would remain a “worthy partner” to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, arguing that its economic reforms are producing results and that security conditions have improved.

Akpabio led a delegation of federal lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, to visit Tinubu at his Lagos residence as part of events marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

He said the legislature would continue to provide legal support for the president’s economic and development agenda.

“We believe he’s doing well,” Akpabio said after the visit.

“These reforms are working and, as far as we are concerned, insecurity is abating and people are able to sleep well.”

Akpabio acknowledged that security challenges persist in parts of the country but described them as isolated “pockets of discontent.”

He linked some of the tensions to increased political activity ahead of the next election cycle.

His remarks contrast with continued concern among some labor and civil-society voices over violence, poverty and the rising cost of living.

The Senate president pointed to the National Assembly’s review of outdated laws–some dating to the colonial era–and its work on a package of four tax measures as evidence of cooperation between the legislature and executive branch.

He said the changes were intended to modernize Nigeria’s tax and broader economic framework.

The Senate President said lawmakers moved quickly to approve legislation that they believe will support economic recovery and lower living costs, despite early skepticism about the proposals.

Akpabio also called for national unity, describing Nigeria’s continued cohesion as a sign of resilience.

He cited the restoration of the former national anthem as a symbol of the country’s aspiration to bridge ethnic and religious divisions.

The National Assembly, he said, would continue to support an administration it views as focused on improving Nigeria’s economic prospects.
