The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, with Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo urging citizens to embrace unity and patriotism as the country advances under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Dr. Tunji-Ojo announced the holiday on behalf of the federal government and extended congratulations to Nigerians at home and abroad.
He described Nigeria’s “warmth, welcoming spirit and love,” alongside its abundant human capital and natural wealth, as evidence that the country remains “the most prosperous Black nation in the world” and “Africa’s pride and beacon of hope.”
The Minister emphasized that peace and stability are prerequisites for national development, calling on Nigerians to emulate the founding fathers’ devotion to the fatherland.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo reassured citizens that the Tinubu administration, through the Renewed Hope Agenda, is committed to delivering “a better Nigeria for all” as a tribute to past heroes.
He urged Nigerians to use the Independence celebration to demonstrate values of unity, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, while affirming the government’s resolve to strengthen national security, improve public safety and create an environment where citizens can pursue their aspirations with confidence.
