Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly Adewale Egbedun has directed the state’s Ministry of Environment to mount an immediate and sustained campaign to remove refuse blocking major roads and to clear clogged drainages and waterways.

A statement from Olamide Tiamiyu, the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, said Egbedun issued the instruction after a meeting with the ministry’s commissioner, Mayowa Adejoorin, and senior ministry officials.

The session was convened as part of the legislature’s oversight responsibilities for environmental sanitation and waste management.

“This is a matter that requires urgent and sustained action to remove heaps of dirt on major roads and to clear blocked and neglected drainages across the state,” Speaker Egbedun.

He warned that functioning drainage systems are critical to preventing flooding, protecting lives and property, and maintaining public health.

The Speaker urged the ministry to ensure proper evacuation and disposal of refuse across major towns, markets, residential areas and other public spaces.

“Waste management must go beyond occasional clean-up exercises and become a sustained and properly coordinated responsibility,” the statement quoted him as saying.

He also pledged continued legislative oversight to hold agencies accountable.

Adejoorin and agency heads briefed the House on current activities, challenges and ongoing interventions, according to the statement.

The directive comes as the state government advances climate and environmental initiatives.

NewsQuest reports that Osun is developing its first Climate Action Plan, intended to guide public and private sectors and households on measures to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and strengthen resilience to climate risks.

Chinwe Obuaku, the Governor’s consultant on climate change and renewable energy, said work on the plan began in 2023 with the formation of an advisory council and the state’s participation at COP28.

She said the draft will be submitted to the House for consideration in advance of a targeted adoption date of November 2025.
