Nigerian Army on Wednesday reshuffled several senior officers in a bid to sharpen operational command and better align its leadership structure with growing security challenges across the country.

Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff approved the moves, the army’s public-relations office said in a statement.

The changes place experienced commanders into key theater and institutional roles as the military seeks faster, more coordinated responses to insurgency, banditry and separatist violence.

Among the most consequential shifts, Major Gen. Ibikunle Ajose was moved from the Army Headquarters’ Department of Army Operations to lead Theatre Command Joint Task Force North-East, Operation HADIN KAI, as theatre commander. His predecessor, Maj. Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, will take up a post at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre as dean of the Faculty of Operational Research.

Other senior reassignments include Maj. Gen. Aminu Umar, who leaves the Department of Civil‑Military Affairs to become commandant of the Army War College; Maj. Gen. G.S. Muhammed, transferred from the Office of the National Security Adviser to serve as director‑general of the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation; and Maj. Gen. Julius Osifo, who moves from that finance corporation to chair the Military Pension Board. Maj. Gen. I.E. Ekpenyong was posted to Defence Headquarters’ Department of Defence Logistics as director of engineering services.

The army also reworked brigade-level commands, naming new commanders to several formations.

Brig. Gen. M.S. Adamu was assigned from the Nigerian Army Women Command to lead the newly established 8 Brigade; Brig. Gen. M.S. Sule moves from the Special Task Force in Operation Enduring Peace to the 27 Task Force Brigade. Other brigade postings included Brig. Gen. I. Sule to 6 Division Garrison and Brig. Gen. E. Azenda to 2 Division Garrison.

The statement said the redeployments were intended to “place the right leadership, experience and expertise in critical operational theatres and strategic appointments” and to align the army’s command structure with an evolving security environment.

Shaibu urged the newly posted officers to justify the confidence reposed in them through “exemplary leadership, operational innovation and professionalism,” and said the army was committed to a dynamic force‑employment framework to improve operational outcomes and strengthen joint and interagency coordination.

Analysts say frequent senior‑level rotations can sharpen capabilities when matched to experience, but they also risk short‑term disruption at a time when continuity matters for complex counterinsurgency and stabilization operations.

The latest reshuffle underscores the army’s focus on institutional reform as it seeks to accelerate responses to contemporary and emerging threats to Nigeria’s national
