Chairman of Folio Media Group and publisher of Daily Times Nigeria, Fidelis Anosike on Monday re-emphasized the newspaper’s commitment to nation building, ethical journalism and innovation as the organisation launched activities to mark its 100th anniversary.

Speaking at a media briefing in the capital, Anosike characterized the centenary as a milestone for both the paper and the nation, noting that Daily Times — founded in 1926 — has chronicled Nigeria’s political, economic and social transformations across a century.

He portrayed the celebration as an opportunity to reaffirm the outlet’s role as a recorder and witness to the country’s evolving institutions and public life.

He said the newspaper’s journey over the last century reflected resilience, credibility and an enduring commitment to informing Nigerians and shaping national discourse.

According to him, Daily Times has chronicled some of the most defining moments in the nation’s history, including the struggle for independence, military interventions, democratic transitions and other landmark events that have shaped modern Nigeria.

Anosike noted that the centenary celebration, themed “100 Years of Fearless Journalism, Championing the Future,” would serve as an opportunity to honour the institution’s rich legacy while positioning it for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing media environment.

“Daily Times is more than a newspaper; it is a living archive of Nigeria’s history and an institution that has contributed significantly to national development through responsible journalism,” he said.

The publisher disclosed that a series of activities had been lined up to commemorate the anniversary, including public lectures, exhibitions showcasing historic newspaper editions and the development of a comprehensive digital archive to preserve and provide public access to the newspaper’s century long collection.

He also outlined plans aimed at strengthening the organisation’s digital presence through investments in multimedia storytelling, data journalism, podcasting and other emerging media platforms.

Anosike stressed the importance of adapting to technological changes while preserving the core values of accuracy, fairness and public service that have defined the newspaper’s operations for decades.

He further announced initiatives targeted at nurturing the next generation of journalists through fellowships, mentorship programmes and capacity building opportunities designed to equip young media professionals with contemporary skills.

The media executive observed that despite significant changes in how news is produced and consumed, the demand for credible information remains essential to democratic governance and national development.

He said Daily Times would continue to evolve with the times while remaining committed to its foundational mission of informing, educating and empowering citizens.

Anosike called on stakeholders across government, the private sector and civil society to support efforts aimed at preserving Nigeria’s media heritage and promoting a vibrant, independent and innovative press.

He expressed confidence that the newspaper would continue to play a leading role in shaping conversations that advance national unity, accountability and sustainable development in the decades ahead.
