Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, a prominent anchor and analyst at Arise News, announced Wednesday that she is taking a leave of absence from journalism to pursue a political career, aiming to represent Nigeria’s Idemili North and South federal constituency in the House of Representatives.

Known for her incisive commentary on governance and public-interest issues, Dr. Ikokwu discribed her move as a natural extension of her work holding power accountable.

“This transition is, for me, a continuation of service, just on a different platform,” she said in a statement.

“I have had the privilege of telling the stories that shape our nation… This journey has sharpened my understanding of our country’s challenges and opportunities.”

Her decision aligns into a rising call in Nigeria for professionals—journalists, business leaders and others with fresh perspectives—to enter politics amid frustrations with entrenched leadership.

Dr. Ikokwu cited her firsthand exposure to policy shortcomings and citizens’ daily struggles as key motivators.

“Politics should not be left only to career politicians; it must also be shaped by individuals with fresh ideas, integrity, and a genuine commitment to public service,” she added.

Dr. Ikokwu, who hails from the constituency she seeks to represent, hopes her candidacy encourages more Nigerians to engage directly in shaping the nation’s future.

She also described the current moment as one demanding “courage and collective responsibility.”
