Tuggar resigns as Foreign Affairs Minister, joins Bauchi Guber race

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar on Monday resigned from the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The Minister said his resignation is effective March 30, 2026, ahead of his bid for the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 general elections.

Tuggar’s resignation follows a directive by President Bola Tinubu mandating all political appointees seeking elective office to step down.

The former Minister is expected to return to Bauchi State to consolidate his political base under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tuggar, who served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany prior to his ministerial appointment in August 2023, is credited with advancing the country’s foreign policy through his “4D Doctrine” — Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.

During his tenure, he championed Nigeria’s strategic autonomy in global affairs, strengthened economic diplomacy through trade engagements, and led efforts for the repatriation of stolen cultural artefacts, including the Benin Bronzes.

He also oversaw initiatives to deepen diaspora engagement and improve consular services for Nigerians abroad.

This marks Tuggar’s third attempt at the Bauchi governorship, having previously contested in 2011 and 2015.

A successor to the foreign affairs portfolio is expected to be named in the coming days as part of an anticipated cabinet reshuffle.
